How Reveal Method restored and transformed a building full of history and character into an inviting family home.
A REVEAL PROJECT
In the thick of the pandemic, Reveal Method undertook the rehabilitation and renovation of a home alongside local contractor Son Builders.
The property was originally built in 1928. Along with the house across the street and the house next door, it was once part of a Turkish camp for girls.
A few plots to the North the stone chimney of the main gathering house can still be seen. A little further down the road is the entrance to a wetlands sanctuary that boasts a well-marked and family-friendly trail.
DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
The building likely started as a quintessential Vermont Cape. The mudroom area, garage, and two bedrooms were added over time. Today, it has approximately 2,300 square feet of finished space.
Though changed over time, the house still retained its signature board-and-batten siding – a detail Reveal was keen to preserve.
Inside, contractors had already altered the roofline and begun reconfiguring the floor plan to make it both safer and more practical. In addition, all systems, plumbing, and electrical were in the process of being gutted out. In all, it’d take hundreds of decisions and a lot of coordination to pull of the project despite a sudden supply chain contraction and skyrocketing materials prices.
METHOD OVER MADNESS
Reveal started out by compiling and centralizing the complicated site work schedule, made more challenging thanks to labor and materials shortages, as well as hundreds of decisions.
A site specification binder was created to capture specification sheets for finishes and fixtures going into each room.
Upgrades to systems, such as adding radiant heat to the mudroom floors and the main bathroom’s shower walls, electrical code requirements, and details related to millwork and cabinetry were handled with regular meetings with subcontractors.
HOME SWEET HOME
Though the project’s completion was delayed due to supply chain shocks throughout the build time, the house was finally ready for its new family early 2022. It sold after just four days on the market, at asking price.
